Mom: It looks like rain in Tallahassee on the radar. Should be reschedule?
Me: What? There’s no rain!
Me, an hour later: I’m still right. It’s not raining. There’s a flood. Der!
So our first scheduled session got rained out. This is what sometimes happens when you pick the perfect day and a great outdoor location for your shoot. But we were able to shoot around the family’s last minute beach vacation. And thanks for making sure everyone wore sunscreen and didn’t show up looking like a lobster, Sam’s mom!
Sam is another lass who will be graduating from Scholar’s Academy in Thomasville. Her mom requested an area with graffiti so we headed to one of my favorite spots in the Gaines Street district and then to Railroad Square. I think we got a great mix of awesome in here! My favorites are Sam on the rubble in the first set and the close-up in the last set. Which is your favorite?
Pretty soon it’s going to be Josh + Kati = PJ. You may remember that a few years back I photographed these two love birds at the Leon County Courthouse for their elopement. And they know me so well that they brought me a HUGE Starbuck’s iced coffee with a splash of milk and 2 Splendas, just how I love it. Nom nom nom! But enough about my coffee habits, on to the photos!
Do you know what I like? Adventures! It’s even more fun with you have a camera and a great subject. James called up asking for some headshots to boost his online presence. We had a fantastic time in Tallahassee at Black Dog Cafe, Lake Ella, and around Railroad Square. Doesn’t he have a wonderful smile?

In February, the editor called me up to schedule a photo shoot with Nathan, the Man in Overalls. He’s a fantastic guy who is very involved in the community and an educator too! My favorite image of him proudly holding a shovel and bouquet of freshly gathered greens & carrots made the cover and a few of the others made it to the inside article.
When I arrived at Nathan’s I was struck by how many different plants he had growing in the raised beds he built! The most beautiful were the cabbage and carrots.
It wasn’t difficult to capture Nathan’s smile – he’s got to be one of the happiest people I’ve ever met!
Below are the iGrows he built and is promoting for a great cause. From their website: iGrow-Whatever You Like is a Frenchtown-based youth empowerment and urban agriculture project, named and largely run by the youth themselves. The iGrow Youth are responsible for the community garden at Second Harvest Food Bank and for manufacturing iGrow Garden Buckets. They aspire to launch a youth-run urban farm in the Frenchtown Community. iGrow is an initiative of the Tallahassee Food Network.
Store bought tomatoes are too acidic for me so my doctor suggested I start growing my own. I did not, by any means, inherit my mother’s green thumbs. I swear, she just looks at a plant sweetly and it starts to thrive. The only time I actually got anything to grow was when I was doing botany research on roses, flowering kale, and soybeans (and, even then, a slew of them died).
My sweetest of sweethearts went and bought me 2 iGrows with heirloom tomato plants! Right after I finish writing this I’m going to go pick them up (and keep them inside because of the still cool temperatures). These babies are going to do great on my front porch and away from Pumpkin, the family dog who is known to eat everything living.

Everyone say hi to Julie! She’s a full-time studio artist who combines fine art & function into a funky mix. It’s completely possible that I use pieces she’s made every day.
We met during our Master of Fine Arts program at FSU way back in 2005. Before moving to Florida she grew up among the cornfields in rural Illinois. Sometimes, she’s a corny gal (bwah! humor!).
Last week we met up for some portraits, and then for extra fun we did a process series. In this case, Julie shows us her process for making a tumbler. A tumbler which will soon be mine. The entire process is just magical. Julie’s studio is absolutely filled with inspiration! The image on the right is a silkscreen she uses in her transfer work.
This was where the magic started for me. I love image transfers (I could show you examples of my work, but I won’t Bogart Julie’s post). Back to the art making.
See! Magic! Julie, of course, had no doubts. I was on the edge of my seat.

The image on the left is a sketch for a piece she’s making for an upcoming exhibition. Remember how I said Julie’s an artist? I meant it! If you see her name in the news be sure you check out that exhibition.
These nesting bowls come in a set of three. I’d love to see them dotted around my house. The smallest is perfect to keep by your bedside and your engagement & wedding band safe at night. Julie takes commissions and can add your names or wedding date. Something to keep in mind if you are trying to think of a unique wedding present too.
